Water pipes

Who is responsible for maintaining and repairing water pipes depends on the location of your water meter and your property boundary.

Water service responsibilities

The pipe from the water main in the street to your water meter

  • If the water meter is within 2 metres from the property boundary, Western Water is responsible for all of the pipe between the water main and your water meter. See the house on the left in the above diagram.
  • If the water meter is more than 2 metres from the property boundary, Western Water is only responsible for the pipe between the water main and your property boundary. See the house on the right in the above diagram.

The water meter

  • Western Water is responsible for maintaining your water meter and replacing it if faulty, regardless of its location.
  • The property owner is responsible for ensuring the water meter does not get damaged, and that it can be easily accessed for reading and maintenance.

All pipes leading from the water meter to any building or tap on your property

  • These pipes are the responsibility of the property owner. If a problem (such as a water leak) occurs, the property owner should engage a licensed plumber for repairs.

Fire services

  • Fire services are privately owned and maintained by the owner. Western Water is only responsible for maintaining the pipes up to the first isolation point at the water main.

Notes

If your water meter is located behind a wall (for example, inside a garage or shop), different responsibilities may apply. More information is available in the below fact sheet.
