What does this project involve?

  • Replacing an old water main with 350 metres of new 100mm pipe.
  • Construction will mainly be in the road pavement.
  • Project is funded as part of Western Water’s Water Main Replacement Program

Why is this project needed?

  • Replacing the existing water main with a new pipe will improve service reliability and lessen the risk of leaks and bursts.
  • It will reduce maintenance and repair costs to the water pipe network.
  • Western Water undertakes regular assessments of its water supply network to ensure it is operating optimally. It considers the age, material and maintenance history of each water main, to identify pipes that need to be replaced.

 When will construction start?

  • Construction will commence late October 2018 and is expected to be completed by late November 2018.
  • Work hours will be 7.30am–5.00pm Monday to Friday. Work may also be undertaken on Saturdays, if required.

Who is undertaking the work?

Tullamarine-based contractor, DKM Utility Services, is undertaking the work on behalf of Western Water.

Will the water supply be impacted?

To minimise disruption to the water supply, properties may be supplied with a temporary water service for a short period of time.

The contractor, DKM Utility Services, will contact property owners and /or tenants to arrange a suitable time to transfer their service.

If a property is to receive a temporary supply, the following should be noted:

  • Property owners and /or tenants should ensure there is access to the water meter during the works—or arrange access with the contractor to connect and disconnect the temporary service.
  • Heavy duty recycled rubber ramps may be provided across the driveway.
  • Ensure vehicles travel slowly over the ramp without stopping or starting.
  • Water from the cold tap will be warmer than usual due to the temporary service.

If a temporary supply cannot be provided, the water service may be shut down briefly. Western Water will provide property owners with advance written notice of when the shut down will take place.

If a property owner has water supply requirements other than normal domestic or business use (e.g. health-related needs), they should contact Western Water directly.

What impacts can be expected during construction?

Impacts will be kept to a minimum; however, the following may occur:

Traffic

There may be increased construction traffic along the street as the contractor goes about their work. Signage will be in place informing road users of construction works.

Reduced parking

Parking may be reduced as the contractor will need to lay the new pipe, and place their machinery, along the roadside.

Noise and dust

There will be some construction noise and dust may be visible but this may vary.

Visual

Fencing, barricades and trench covers may be used near the work site to ensure public safety. The contractor may also establish a storage area nearby for equipment and construction materials.

What about driveway access?

For the most part, access to driveways will be maintained. There may be occasions when workers will need to temporarily work across driveways. Should this happen, property owners and /or tenants will be notified in advance so that alternative access can be arranged.
