Sunbury Recycled Water Plant Upgrade

We're upgrading the recycled water plant that services Sunbury and Diggers Rest.

Project snapshot

Town(s): Diggers Rest, Sunbury,

Status: Under construction

Cost: $53 million project over 10 years for upgrade, operation and other costs

Expected Completion Date: April 2019

The Sunbury Recycled Water Plant (RWP) is undergoing an extensive upgrade, which will increase the treatment capacity by 56% to 9.2 million litres per day.

The plant treats wastewater from Sunbury and Diggers Rest. These towns are among the highest growth areas in Victoria.

Opened in 1982, the Sunbury RWP - which is located at the end of Harker Street - had almost reached its treatment capacity when the upgrade began.

Who will undertake the upgrade?

The RWP upgrade is being undertaken by Downer, who were awarded the design, build and operate contract, announced by Minster for Climate Change, Environment and Water on 1 February 2016.

Downer commenced construction in October 2016, with Stage One of the upgrade completed in March 2018.

Stage Two is currently underway, which includes refurbishing parts of the old plant. This will involve inspecting and rehabilitating some existing in-ground tanks and then preparing them for their new purpose. The upgrade is scheduled to be complete by April 2019.

The upgrade is the most significant capital works project in Western Water’s history. Despite significantly increasing its treatment capacity, the upgraded plant will only marginally increase in size as the innovative design will refurbish and modify as much of the existing plant as possible.

Other benefits of the Sunbury RWP upgrade include:

  • higher quality recycled water
  • better odour mitigation
  • improved energy consumption.
