Reading your water meter

You may want to read your water meter from time to time to assess your water use.

The dial on most common types of meters is divided into two brackets - kilolitres (1000 litres) and litres. There is a row of up to eight figures behind glass on your meter.

Water meter diagram

Examples from three different types of water meters are shown in the diagram above. The black numbers are kilolitres (1000 litres) and the red numbers are litres. In Example A, the reading shows 1,234,567.8 litres.

How much water are you using?

It is easy to calculate how much water you are using on a per person, per day basis.

To help you to work out how much water your household uses per person per day, use the below example:

Example
Step 1: Record your meter reading on day one.

852

Step 2: Record your meter reading again one week later, at the same time of the day.

3162

Step 3: Subtract week one from week two.

2310

Step 4: Divide the total by seven. This figure will give you the average daily consumption for your household.

330

Step 5: Divide the figure by the number of people in your household. This is your average water use per person per day. In this example, there are two people in the household.
