Understanding your bill

Western Water customers receive an account three times per year. In general, your account will include:

  • Service charges for water, sewerage and/or recycled water, if you are the owner of the property
  • Usage charges based on meter readings for water and/or recycled water, if you are the occupier of the property
  • A comparison of your water usage over the previous 12 months
  • A comparison of your water usage with the average for residents living in your area for the current period
Residential landlords and tenants: who pays?

Landlords and tenants have different rights and responsibilities in relation to the payment of water and wastewater charges to residential properties.

In general, the landlord must pay:

  • Service charges for water and wastewater services
  • The Melbourne Water Waterways Charge (where applicable)
  • Usage charges, where the property is not individually metered

A tenant is responsible for the usage charges to a property they occupy if the property is individually metered.
