Biosolids

An Alternative Fertiliser Solution

Biosolids are a nutrient rich organic material that is produced from the water recycling process to meet specific quality criteria, regulated by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

Comprised of a combination of water and organic materials, biosolids contain valuable nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous which make them a viable alternative fertiliser solution if applied under the right conditions.

Biosolids from Western Water have a soil like consistency and are transported and spread in a manner similar to other fertilisers. They can be used as:

  • Fertiliser
  • Soil conditioner
  • Topsoil substitute for landfill
  • Composted with green waste
  • Structural material in road construction

Assisting with our long-term target of 100% reuse, our Melton Recycled Water Plant was recently upgraded to incorporate a dewatering facility. This facility reduces the potential source of groundwater pollution and assists with future reuse.

Partnerships with local farmers and communities will help Western Water to develop a sustainable biosolids industry with a high quality biosolids product.
