Western Water’s region has experienced more than 13 years of below average rainfall and local reservoirs have fallen to extremely low levels. Today, most of Western Water’s customers are supplied with water from the Melbourne system.
Western Water treats drinking water to comply with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. Water mains totalling 1,741km delivered 10,592 megalitres of drinking water to customers in 2009/10.
Waste water is treated to produce recycled water as well as biosolids, an alternative agricultural fertiliser. Sewer mains totalling 1,086km removed 7,989 megalitres of waste water from customers during the last financial year.
