Recycled water in the home

Building Sustainable Communities

Western Water supplies Class A recycled water to residents of the new township of Eynesbury via a piped supply called dual reticulation. Water is supplied from our new Class A Recycled Water Plant at Melton.

Eynesbury showcases state of the art urban water design. The scheme features an integrated approach towards water efficiency, water recycling, and regional stormwater treatment and recirculation.

Class A recycled water at Eynesbury is used for domestic uses other than drinking including toilet flushing, garden watering, and car washing. It is also used for watering public open spaces and recreation areas and, in a Victorian first, for fire fighting.

Class A Recycled Water and Co-Generation Plant

The Eynesbury project is set to be the first of many for the region. Not only will the supply of Class A recycled water significantly reduce the pressure placed on valuable drinking water, it will also reduce pressure on our energy resources as it will be powered by 100% renewable energy from our own biogas cogeneration facility (currently in development).

The benefits of the project are anticipated to include:

  • Up to 50% reduction in drinking water for new developments
  • Greater than 50% saving in carbon emissions
  • To date over 500 million litres of drinking water has been saved through the use of recycled water at Eynesbury.
Awards and Recognition

Three recent awards have recognised Western Water's innovative contribution toward a sustainable water future through the supply of Class A recycled water to Eynesbury.

Western Water won a 2009 Save Water Award in the Water Corporations category. Earlier in the year, we won the United Nations Australia World Environment Day award for Excellence in Sustainable Water Management. We were also a finalist in the Built Environment category for the Premier's Sustainability Awards.
