Melton Waste to Energy Facility

Western Water constructed a facility to treat organic food waste at Melton Recycled Water Plant to generate additional biogas for renewable energy.

On Friday 26 March 2021, the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, the Hon. Lily D'Ambrosio, officially launched our new Waste to Energy Facility.

The Minister was joined by Sustainability Victoria CEO Claire Ferres Miles, Member for Melton, Steve McGhie, and Western Water’s Managing Director Jeff Rigby and Board Director, Les McLean.

The innovative Melton Waste to Energy Facility reduces Western Water’s greenhouse gas emissions while extracting the full value from local food waste, potentially decreasing the amount of food waste going to landfill and associated transportation costs.

The $3.3 million facility was constructed with an $800k grant from Sustainability Victoria’s Waste to Energy Infrastructure Fund.
