Foundation - Grade 2 resources

Dive in and enjoy these watery resources for lower primary!

Through discussion, stories, videos, hands on demonstrations, STEM experiments, children will learn about and explore our most precious resource, water! These activities engage children in learning, collaboration and thinking about the water cycle, weather, health and mindfulness.

We'd love to see what you create and how you get involved in National Water Week. Simply share your completed activities, artworks or experiments, either by scanning or taking a photo, and send to education@westernwater.com.au or 0404 865 597 (please include an email address).   • Yoga, mindfulness and the five stages of the water cycle: Join us to experience the water cycle through gentle yoga movements. Watch this video on YouTube

  • Star meditation: This star meditation calms the mind, and can be done at any time. It helps to improve wellbeing for everybody and it’s so easy to do. Watch this video on YouTube

  • Mind and body relaxation using yoga: Doing this short mindfulness exercise and a few simple yoga stretches throughout the day can help to relieve tension in your body and keep your mind calm and alert. You can undertake these exercises anytime. Watch this video on YouTube.

  • Journey of a water droplet relaxation: Get comfortable, close your eyes, and be taken on a relaxing journey through the water cycle. Watch this video on YouTube.

  • Join Sammy's Waterwise Club: Free to join and open to all primary school aged children, you will receive a welcome pack, a birthday card each year and can enter Sammy's competitions to win some fun prizes! Visit our online form or download a printable form1MB.

  • Warrior Bookmarks (Literacy): Create your own bookmarks using our template and share water saving messages with friends and family. Download the activity sheet360KB.

  • The Water Cycle Collage (Science, The Arts): Watch our Exploring Weather and the Water Cycle video. Use a variety of materials to get creative and produce your own collage of the water cycle. Download the activity sheet2MB.

Theme: Water For Health

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Healthy food stories (Literacy): Read aloud to your class, share our magical story about the Apple Star and discover a wonderful surprise along the way! (Make sure you are prepared with a fresh apple to share with your class – you will need it as part of the story!) Learn about how water is so very precious for all life on Earth.   • Make a healthy hydrating snack plate (Health): Use a variety of fresh, hydrating foods to make delicious platter or a funny fruit face and gobble it up! Download the activity sheet3MB.

  • Healthy eating paper plate (Health, The Arts): Using collage materials, craft glue and a paper plate, make a plate of healthy food choices. Share with your siblings, friends or classmates - did you make the foods as colourful and healthy as possible? Download the activity sheet3MB.

 

Theme: Water For Home

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Watery Puzzles (Literacy, The Arts): Solve the Tap Maze and work out which letters are missing from Sammy’s important message. Colour Sammy in and create a poster. Download the activity sheet3MB.

  • Kitchen Science - Make a Cola drink activity (Science, Health): Watch our Water for Health video. Complete a teacher demonstration to make a Cola drink following our instructions. Discuss why water is the best choice for healthy bodies! Download the activity sheet2MB

  • Make your own water filter - teacher demonstration (Science): Follow our instructions to make your own simple water filter. Students can draw a simple diagram of the filter. Discuss how lucky we are to have fresh, clean drinking water readily available in our homes and community. Download the activity sheet2MB.

 

Theme: Water For the Environment

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Sammy’s chatterbox: Print, make and use our Water Chatterboxes to learn about water and have fun with your classmates. Have a go at making your own Water Themed Chatterbox. Download the activity sheet3MB.

  • Water Cycle art (Science, The Arts): Create a digital or hand drawn art piece which shows the three main stages of the water cycle - evaporation, condensation, precipitation. Watch our Exploring the Weather and Water Cycle video to help you.

  • The Water Cycle Song (Science, Digital Technologies, The Arts): Teach the water cycle song to someone in your family, or record yourself singing or rapping it and send it to family or friends - "Water travels in a cycle, yes it does! Water travels in a cycle, yes it does! It goes up, evaporation…makes clouds condensation, it comes down, precipitation...yes it does!!". Watch our video.

Theme: Water for our Community

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Become a meteorologist (Science, Literacy, The Arts): Track the weather for a week and draw or write about what you observe each day. Choose the day with the most interesting weather and film yourself presenting a short weather report! Try to include a funny weather joke to make people laugh.

  • Make a simple rain gauge (Science): Use our instructions and find out how much rain falls in your area. Download the activity sheet428KB.

  • Water mindfulness colouring (Yoga and Mindfulness): Watch our Yoga and Mindfulness video. Take some deep breaths, find somewhere relaxing to sit, and use your favourite textas or pencils to complete our mindfulness colouring activity. Download the activity sheet3MB.

Theme: Exploring local waterways and making a difference in our community!

Spend some time over the weekend enjoying your local waterways and natural environment, having fun with water and making some family goals to become more waterwise and sustainable at home!
