Customers receiving recycled water through the dual pipe system are required to check for cross connections on their property every twelve months.
Remember to mark off the cross connection check sticker located in your electrical meter box to help you keep track of when the last cross connection check occurred. Plumbers are required to conduct checks when carrying out new plumbing works in your home and Western Water conducts random audits throughout the year.
How to check for recycled water cross connections
- Step 1– Turn off drinking water
Turn off your drinking water supply at the water meter outside your house. Leave the recycled water meter on.
- Step 2– Inside your home
One by one turn on all sink, bath and shower taps inside your house (hot and cold) and flush all toilets. Taps should run dry after a short period of time indicating they are connected to the drinking water supply, but toilets should refill as normal to indicate they are connected to the recycled water supply.
- Step 3 – Outside your home
Turn on all drinking water taps and purple recycled water taps outside your house. The drinking water taps should run dry after a short period of time indicating they are connected to the drinking water supply, but the purple recycled water taps should run as normal indicating they are connected to the recycled water supply.
- Step 4 – Appliances inside your home
Do not attempt to check appliances with the drinking water supply turned off. To check appliances turn the drinking water meter back on, but turn the purple recycled water meter off. Turn on appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers, to ensure they will fill. If they do not fill they are wrongly connected.
- Step 5 – After completing the test
Turn off all taps and turn both meters back on outside your house. When you turn your first tap on, do so slowly to allow any trapped air to escape.
Remember to check that all purple taps outside your home have a removable handle and have the correct ‘Recycled Water Do Not Drink’ sign.
