Western Water says ‘prevention is better than cure’ when it comes to frozen meters.
When meters and pipes are exposed to very cold temperatures, the water inside them can freeze, resulting in a property having no water.
“Placing a cover over the meter and pipes is the best way to prevent the water inside them freezing,” said Graham Holt, General Manager, Customer, Community Relations and Operations.
Very cold weather can also cause unprotected pipes and meters to be damaged.
“When water freezes, it expands, and this can cause the meter to burst and/or pipes to split,” said Mr Holt.
“In the unfortunate event of a frozen meter, you should wait for it to thaw naturally. Never pour boiling or hot water over a meter to defrost it, as this can cause it to split”.
While Western Water maintains and manages the main pipelines and meters, property owners are reminded they are responsible for damage that occurs to pipes on their side of the property.
Western Water suggests a variety of options for covering water meters, including a large bucket, cardboard or plastic box, half a tyre, a hessian bag or an old blanket.
Regardless of the item the customer uses to cover their meter, they need to ensure it can be easily removed for meter reading and maintenance.
