Western Water applies to increase bulk water entitlement

10 January 2020

Western Water has applied to the Minister for Water to amend its bulk water entitlement to the Werribee system.

A bulk entitlement is a legal right to take and use water granted under the Water Act 1989 and can only be held by water corporations and other specified parties.

The amendment will provide Western Water with an additional 10 percent inflow share and 20 percent of storage capacity in Lake Merrimu.

In effect, it will increase Western Water’s inflow share of Lake Merrimu from 70 percent to 80 percent and its share of storage capacity from 60 percent to 80 percent.

Western Water’s bulk entitlement amendment will have no impact on other water corporations or entitlement holders in the Werribee system as the inflow and storage shares applied for are currently unallocated.

The application is currently under consideration by the Minister for Water. Subject to approval, it will come into effect after a published notice in the Government Gazette.
