Within easy commuting distance of the city, Gisborne has experienced strong growth in the last decade.
We use a number of water sources to ensure we can meet demand in Gisborne, even when inflows are low.
Gisborne’s water can be sourced from:
- nearby Rosslynne Reservoir and treated at the Rosslynne Water Filtration Plant, and
- the Melbourne supply system.

Gisborne’s sewage is treated at the Gisborne Recycled Water Plant to the east of town.
Gisborne Recycled Water Plant produces Class B recycled water.
The recycled water is used to irrigate local farms, sportsfields and recreation areas.
Western Water has a licence to discharge excess recycled water volumes to Jacksons Creek under strict conditions set by the Environment Protection Authority.
Projects and planned works
Steady population growth is expected for Gisborne. To cater for this and ensure we remain compliant with relevant legislation and standards, the following projects are underway:
