Secondary school resources

Designed to promote critical and creative thinking, these activity suggestions will complement the Secondary Curriculum.

They provide students with opportunities to investigate our most precious resource, water, in the past, present and future. Students will explore issues and concepts of sustainability, design and their local and wider community. Students will use scientific and mathematical thinking skills, and will reflect on and express their own experiences with water through Design, Digital Technologies and The Arts.

Theme: Traditional Owners - Connection to Land and Water

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Enjoy your local environment (History, Geography): Take a walk or spend some time in a local natural place that you enjoy, such as a park, nature reserve, local wetlands. Reflect on how the area you live in has changed since white settlement. Research who the local indigenous tribe/traditional owners are in your area and investigate the area of land which belongs to the tribe. Make a digital display showing the land area covered by the local tribe and write some dot points including the tribe name and language spoken.
  • Investigating and predicting human water use (History, Maths): In the mid-1700s, there were 30,000 Indigenous Australians living in Victoria. Indigenous Australians used approximately 10 litres of water per person, per day. Now there are approximately 6.22 million people living Victoria. On average, Victorians use 160 litres of water per person, per day. What impact does it have on our water resources? What do you think the average daily use of water (per person, per day), will be in a hundred in years? Investigate and present your findings in a PowerPoint, essay, informative text or poster.

Theme: Water at Home

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Investigate Water Treatment (Science, Design and Technologies): Visit the website for the Western Treatment Plant and sewage treatment. Investigate how it has evolved to become a world leader in sustainable sewerage treatment and how it doubles as a thriving ecosystem with an internationally recognised bird habitat. Create an informative PowerPoint to share your findings with others.

  • Investigate and explain recycled water (Science, Design and Technologies): Create an informative poster explaining the benefits of recycled water and purple taps. Greater Western Water produces Class A recycled water from the Melton Recycled Water Plant and Altona Treatment Plant.

  • Sustainable community design (Design and Technologies): Use an app or hand draw a design for your own waterwise sustainable house or community building such as school, library or sporting facility. Label the waterwise and sustainable features on your design.

  • Investigate Melbourne Council House 2 (CH2) (Design and Technologies): This is a multi-award winning and inspirational building that has reduced CO2 emissions by 87%, electricity consumption by 82%, gas by 87% and water by 72%. It is located at 240 Little Collins Street in the CBD of Melbourne. Council House 2 (CH2) claims to be Australia's greenest and healthiest office building and the Green Building Council of Australia has awarded the building six Green Stars. Find out more.

Theme: Water in the backyard and the environment

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Make a simple water filter (Science): Research how to make a simple water filter. Use everyday materials to make and test a simple water filter. Film your experiment and share it with your family, classmates or teacher. Download the ACTIVITY SHEET(2MB).
  • Water artwork (The Arts): Create a digital or hand drawn art piece to celebrate how precious water is. Write a paragraph about the intended audience and the message your artwork portrays.
  • Our oceans - reflective thinking and creative expression (English, The Arts): June 8th was World Ocean Day. Reflect on your own personal experiences with the ocean. Have you visited the ocean? Have you seen it on movies or read about it in books? How does it make you feel? Create an art piece or write a poem to describe/portray the ocean.

Theme: Water for Health

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Sugar content graphing activity (Maths): Make a graph showing the sugar content of various beverages (choose at least 10 beverages). Present the graph in 3 different ways, and write a paragraph describing which is the best choice for your health and why.

  • Beverage diary (Health): Keep a beverage diary to track how much water and other beverages you are drinking throughout the week. At the end of the week, research how much water someone your age should be drinking each day. Make a graph showing your daily beverage intakes and reflect on how you might improve your choices for the benefit of your body. Write a goal for the next week to see if you can improve on how much water you are drinking. If you are meeting the target - well done!

  • Informative diagram/poster (Health): Create an informative diagram/poster showing the main organs of the body and how they use water. Include an explanation about why water is important for our overall body and brain health.

  • Make your own Cola drink experiment (Science experiment): Make your own Cola drink using instructions provided. Film your experiment or write/draw about it. Download the ACTIVITY SHEET.

Theme: Water in the Community

These activities are available for the duration of the Online Learning Festival.

  • Rainfall Data Maths activity (Maths, Science): Explore rainfall data for the Greater Western Water region for the past 100 years. What trends do you see? Find the average for each decade. For the decade with the lowest rainfall, discuss the possible impacts of low rainfall on society, comparing city versus country communities.
  • Investigating Climate Change and Water (Science, Geography): 22 March 2021 was World Water Day. The theme was Valuing Water. Create a PowerPoint, movie or video clip describing the link between Climate Change and Water. Investigate how Climate Change will impact on different communities around the world, and research some innovative solutions to climate change that are being developed around the world.

Theme: Exploring local waterways and parks with your family!

Spend some time over the weekend enjoying your local waterways and natural environment, having fun with water and making some family goals to become more waterwise and sustainable at home!
