$53 million Sunbury Recycled Water Plant upgrade officially opened

27 June 2019

Member for Sunbury Josh Bull officially opened the upgraded Sunbury Recycled Water Plant on Tuesday 25 June.

The $53 million government funded upgrade is the largest ever capital works project in Western Water’s history.

The upgrade provides improved infrastructure for the fast-growing Sunbury region with the plant’s treatment capacity increased by over 50%, from 5.9 million litres to 9.2 million litres per day.

Despite the significant increase in the plant’s treatment capacity, the facility will operate within the same environmental footprint, due to innovative technology.

The upgrade included the construction of a new tower to ensure better odour control and new technology that allows Western Water to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.

The local community was engaged extensively throughout the project and over 250,000 personnel hours were spent upgrading the plant.

This project exemplifies Western Water’s commitment to improving our infrastructure to meet our customers’ needs while still incorporating sustainable practices.
