Since the 1990s, Melton has experienced strong population growth. In 2010, Melton was included within Melbourne’s urban growth boundary. Rockbank is a growing community to the south east of Melton.

Sewage collected in the Melton area is treated at the Melton Recycled Water Plant, located near Mount Cottrell.
The plant is home to some of Western Water’s most innovative facilities including:
Melton Recycled Water Plant produces both Class A and Class C recycled water.
Class C recycled water is used to irrigate farms, sportsfields and recreation areas.
Class A recycled water is used in thousands of residential homes in Melton and Eynesbury for toilet flushing, laundry and outdoor watering.
Greater Western Water has a licence to discharge excess recycled water volumes to Werribee River under strict conditions set by the Environment Protection Authority.
Strong population growth is expected to continue for the Melton area. To cater for this and ensure we remain compliant with relevant legislation and standards, the following projects are underway:

Western Water constructed a 500-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array at the Melton Recycled Water Plant
Western Water completed a stormwater harvesting project in the Atherstone residential estate south of Melton.
We built a new sewer rising main to transport sewage from our new sewer pump station in Rockbank to the Melton Recycled Water Plant in Mount Cottrell.
We constructed a new sewer main to transfer sewage from the Woodlea Estate to our pump station in Rockbank.
